Research courses, BSc and MSc theses

  • Individual research courses (min. 6 weeks) for BSc and MSc students, BSc and MSc theses in 'Molecular Genetics of Plant-Microbe Symbiosis' can be conducted at any time of the year given that capacities are available. For BSc thesis we strongly recommend to perform a research course in our laboratory before starting the thesis. If you are interested in joining the Gutjahr lab for any of these, please contact Caroline Gutjahr directly by email.

We offer research topics related to:
    - phytohormone signaling in arbuscular mycorrhiza symbiosis
    - transcriptional regulation of arbuscular mycorrhiza symbiosis
    - nutrient exchange/role of lipids in arbuscular mycorrhiza symbiosis
    - increase of drought stress resistance by arbuscular mycorrhiza

If you want to obtain a better idea of our research interest before applying for a research course or thesis we recommend reading this comprehensive review article: PDF.
Techniques and methods will depend on the individual project and may include: golden gate cloning, plant transformation, quantitative real time PCR, phenotypic analysis of roots and fungal structures by microscopy, fluorescence microscopy and analysis of subcellular compartments with fluorescent fusion proteins, handling of plants and arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi, hormone physiology, transactivation assays, protein expression and purification, protein-protein interaction techniques (yeast-2-hybrid, CoIP), Western blotting, large scale plant phenotyping, genetic mapping or genotyping, data analysis using R, preparation of figures in publication quality.
Many of these techniques are transferable to other (non-plant) organisms.

To work in our lab you need to have a laboratory liability insurance for students  (Laborhaftpflichtversicherung).
